What To Do to Prepare for Your Trip to Newfoundland

It’s January, and if you’re dreaming about your next adventure, there’s no better place than Newfoundland. From spectacular whale watching in Trinity Bay to close-up iceberg sightings in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland offers unforgettable experiences for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. Planning ahead is key to making the most of your trip. We’ve put together our top tips for booking, packing, and staying up to date with all the marine wildlife and natural wonders you won’t want to miss.

Car Rental

Make sure you book your rental car as soon as possible. Rental cars are in short supply here and waiting may leave you having to use your thumb to get out to Trinity! It’s important to also mention that there is very little in the way of public transport in and around rural areas which are the best parts of the island so a car is necessary when visiting. It is also important to book your accommodations, especially during the busiest months, June – August.

Stay updated on local happenings!

When we first launched Sea of Whales Adventures, we noticed that very few companies were telling customers what their sightings were. It was important for us to communicate our sightings each and every day with pictures or videos. Following our daily sightings posts on Facebook, Instagram and on our Google business listing will allow you to see what has been happening out there in the days and weeks leading up to your trip.

It’s not just whales that visitors come to see, it’s also icebergs. We post what we are seeing in our area, but how do you find where the icebergs are when you leave the Bonavista peninsula? If you’re on Facebook, add the group Newfoundland and Labrador Iceberg Reports — they feature photographs and real time information on icebergs from residents, tour operators, and visitors. You can also view up-to-date information and sign up for alerts about icebergs on www.icebergfinder.com.

What to pack

The temperature is highly variable here even in the summer. Pack clothes for spring, summer AND fall. Lots of layers with waterproof shoes and a warm hat for those cool mornings and evenings on or near the water. And don’t forget the sunscreen, even when we can’t see the sun through the fog, you can still get a burn!

Plan ahead!

Newfoundland is a popular destination, especially during the summer months, so we always recommend booking your whale watching and iceberg tours in advance. Securing your spot early not only guarantees you won’t miss out on the best times and boats, but it also gives you peace of mind while planning the rest of your trip. Check out all our tour options and book your adventure today on our Sea of Whales Tours page.

We can’t wait to welcome you to our corner of the island, where every trip supports whale research and conservation, and every sighting is a story to remember! We look forward to welcoming you to Newfoundland! See you all soon!
