Things to do with kids on the Bonavista peninsula

Looking for things to do with kids on the Bonavista peninsula? At Sea of Whales, we aren’t just whale watchers, we are parents too. We live here and have had the pleasure of exploring this region with our children. Here’s our top ten list of family friendly things to do while visiting the Trinity Bight area.

The Trinity Pageant

Rising Tide Theatre has live shows every day. If sitting still through a show might be challenging for your family, they also offer the Trinity Pageant – a walking play! You will be guided to various locations throughout Trinity where costumed actors reenact different events in both Trinity and Newfoundland history. It’s always a favourite with kids. Be careful you may get recruited to work as a pirate! The pageant happens each Wednesday and Saturday afternoon, weather permitting.

Little Free Libraries

Travelling with kids can be tricky, their books and toys can take up so much room. The town of Trinity has three little free libraries. The one at the park in the centre of Trinity is just for children’s books! Help yourself to a book or two for bedtime stories, and then leave one or two behind when you go!

Champney’s West Aquarium

Champney’s West Aquarium has something for the whole family.  The aquarium has 14 tanks housing various species including touch tanks, as well as a whale skeleton, and craft area. It’s always cool in the aquarium so it’s a great place to visit on a hot afternoon when you need a break from the sun or on a rainy day when you need a fun inside activity.

Sweet Rock Ice Cream/Aunt Sarah’s Chocolate Shop

A perfect day most certainly involves a visit to Sweet Rock Ice Cream or Aunt Sarah’s Chocolate Shop. Both the ice cream and chocolates are made right in Trinity with premium ingredients. There are locations in Trinity and Bonavista as well as a few others around the province. Goods from here make great gifts to bring home to friends….if they last that long.

Two Whales Coffee Shop

Two Whales Coffee Shop is another great experience. This coffee shop serves yummy vegetarian and vegan food with as much as possible being grown/made on site. Order your meal at the counter and then sit outside in one of their picnic pods or picnic tables to eat, where the kids can move around as needed.  While you wait for your meal, you can ask the kitchen for some bread to feed the chickens. The desserts here are not to be missed – Save some room or take one home for later!

Trinity Cabins Pizza Night

What’s more family friendly than pizza? Friday evenings from mid May to mid September, Trinity Cabins serves up the most delicious pizzas. You have to call ahead to order and book your pickup time, call early…..they book up fast!

Hiking with kids on the Skerwink trail. Things to do with kids on the Bonavista peninsula

Hiking

The Hike Discovery network offers some beautiful hikes around the peninsula. There is lots of information on their website about the different trails. In Trinity Bight some fun, short hikes include the Upper and Lower Gun Hill trail. Skerwink and Fox Island are also favourites if your children are big enough to hike without being carried.

Random Passage Site

Go back in time as you discover what life was like for the early settlers who came to Newfoundland’s shores to fish. Interpreters on the Random Passage Site site will explain how settlers lived while you tour different types of homes, the church and fish flakes and learn how fish was “made”. No visit here is complete without a treat at the tea room. Their gingerbread with custard sauce is the best!

Beach Combing

What’s better than walking a beach in search of sea glass and other treasures? Or just sitting on the shore throwing stones? This region is full of great beaches for doing just that.

Playgrounds

Something that you won’t often come across in your planning is the locations of playgrounds.  The town of Trinity has a recently upgraded play structure, swings, as well as basketball, pickle ball and beach volleyball courts.  Bishop White School, in Port Rexton, has a beautiful playground that is hidden away behind the school. Just drive around the back and park there. There is also a great playground in Dunfield with swings, play structures, a basketball hoop, and push toys.

Whale watching with Sea of Whales Adventures. Things to do with kids on the Bonavista peninsula

Of course, no trip to Trinity Bight would be complete without a tour with Sea of Whales Adventures!

We are a family owned and operated company, with over 25 years of whale watching experience in the area. Our custom-built Zodiacs are designed for your family’s safety and comfort, with classic-style seating. Children can be seated on their own, or on their adult’s lap. The flotation gear for children includes a one piece insulated suit with a matching life jacket over top to keep your children warm and comfy. These suits look very similar to the flotation suits worn by the adults on the boat. Your family will enjoy learning all about the whales and wildlife from our experienced guides. Possible visits to waterfalls, caves and eagle’s nests are also part of the adventure when conditions and time permit. You may even get a whale named after you!
